Sign Language training for teachers in Gulu Launched

Save the Children –Gulu branch has granted Gulu Deaf Association (GDA) 14m UGX for training Sign language to teachers. The project is to benefit 40 teachers and 10 members of Save the Children in Uganda .It was launched on 19th June 2007 in Gulu by Gulu Municipal Education officer The 3 months project will be held at Gulu Disabled persons union in Gulu town –Northern Uganda. This project will improve the access to education by the Deaf in the District and the region at large. There are two Deaf schools in the district but all have been lacking teachers fluent in Sign language. This has made the teaching inaccessible to the Deaf leading to massive drop out of Deaf children from schools and poor performances.

Lira Deaf training

The revival of Lira Deaf Association (LDA ) has commenced with the first general capacity building training workshop being held . LDA one of the pioneer local Deaf branches at district level to be established by UNAD in the early 90s has been crippled with mismanagement due to weak internal cohesion amongst its leaders and membership. With support from PACT Omega 2 general capacity training workshops each lasting a week are to be held. The first training run from 3rd -8th June 2007. The second is due from 8th-13th July 2007. The topics being covered in these trainings include leadership and management, gender and deafness . Others are team building, advocacy, lobbying, networking and conflict resolution

ILO/FUE trains Deaf Women

International Labour Organisation (ILO) in conjunction with National Women with Disabilities in Uganda and Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) has organized a 5 days residential training of Deaf Women Entreprenuers. The training that was held in Kampala attracted 20 deaf Women selected from Central region. The training that covred areas like records keeping, customer relations, market search etc was coordinated by Stephen Jjingo of FUE/ILO.

Uganda Nominated for WFD Board

A Uganda Deaf lady Oyuu Deborah Iyute was nominated vie for the post of WFD Board member for the period 2007-2011. She is one of the 4 from Africa that have been nominated. Elections for the Board members will be held during the upcoming XV WFd Congress due from 16th-22nd Juky in Madrid-Spain. The Danish Deaf Association (DDL) a long time and pioneer development partner has pledged to meet all her travel and accommodation costs to attend WFD Board meetings if she is elected.

Training of Sign language interpreters in Gulu

Training of Sign language interpreters in northern district of Gulu has started. The 5monthscourse has 10 trainees. Out of that period 2 months will be for field practice. This activity is being undertaken by UNAD in partnership with Pact Omega a US agency.

UNAD recruits new staff

UNAD has recruited 2 new staff. A Driver and an Assistant Accountant. The recruitment was held by Personnel Committee that held its meeting at the end of March 2007.

Reviewing the Kambara Deaf Development project

UNAD has hired a consultant to review the Kambara Deaf Development project being funded by Action Aid International Uganda. The review is aimed at ascertaining whether the project is on track, It will also identify the challenges or bottlenecks hindering the project and recommend possible solutions to address them. AAIU has been partnering with UNAD since 2000, the project activities are based in the districts of Mbarara, Isingiro and Kyenjojo with major focus on Education and HIV/AIDS.

Ugandan nominated to the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)

Ms Deborah Iyute Oyuu a Uganda Deaf, has been nominated to contest for elections to the next World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Board of Directors. Ms Oyuu is also a Board member of RSESA (Regional Secretariat for East and Southern Africa), an organization that brings together 17 National Deaf Associations in East and Southern Africa region. We wish her success in the elections.

UNAD to carry out SWOT Anaylsis of Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD)

UNAD due to its vast experience in modeling Deaf Associations has been requested to carry out SWOT analysis of Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD). Alex Ndeezi, UNAD Exercise Director was in Malawi recently to do the exercise that is being funded by NAD.

Review of UNAD / AAIU partnership

Review of UNAD / AAIU partnership project is being implemented in the districts of Kyenjojo, Mbarara and Isingiro is in process; UNAD has already appointed a Consultant knowledgeable in Sign language and deaf issues to carry out the exercise. This will involve literature reviews, field meetings and launching the evaluation and findings report.

UNAD gets support from Pact Omega

UNAD with support from Pact Omega is to build the capacity of Lira Deaf Association and train 20 sign language interpreters in the two districts. The partnership will begin in March 2007 and run for one year.
