Further Sign language training for 2 (two) weeks in July 2009

Another training will be conducted during the first two weeks of July 2009. The trainings that were held regionally, benefited all regional head offices. The trained personnel can now communicate in basic Sign language with the Deaf people. Their attitudes towards the Deaf have changed so greatly that they are now contacting UNAD for provision of Sign language interpretation services.

Training of Deaf trainers of trainees for human rights to take place in Kampala

Training of deaf trainers of trainees for human rights will take place in Kampala between 1-3rd July 2009. The 10 trainers will be responsible to sensitise Deaf persons in rural areas about human rights issues.

UNAD to participate in Women’s Day celebrations.

The purpose of our participation is to raise awareness about the unique needs of Deaf women and seek development partners to mainstream them in their programs/activities.

Two project steering committee meetings to be held in March 2009.

The meetings are for the KAMBARA project supported by Action Aid international Uganda and The Finnish Association of the Deaf supported project. The committees meet twice each year to receive reports on the progress of implementation of project activities, approve action plans and provide guidance in addressing any challenges being encountered.

UNAD to hold orientation workshops in Mbale, Masindi, Pader and Kasese districts

The workshops will be for briefing the Deaf and local authorities about the capacity building and sign language training project that is to kick off in the 4 districts soon.

USAID the funder has released UGX 105 Million as first instalment for the two (2) year project worth US $191,000

National conference of parents of Deaf children to take place from 26th to 29th January 2009.

The national conference of parents of Deaf children is to be held in Kampala from 26th from 29th January 2009. A parents of Deaf children Association is expected to be formed, action plans for advocating for the rights of deaf children drafted.

commencement of the construction of UNAD resource centre set for February 2009.

The ground breaking /commencement of the construction of UNAD resource centre in Mukono is set for February 2009.

UNAD to host World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Board meeting in September 2009.

The event will take place from 20th to 26th of September 2009 in Kampala. It will coincide with celebrations to mark Deaf Awareness Week.
